WEEK 4, DAY 26: LOVE

Can you imagine what it felt like to be one of the ninety-nine? Doing the right thing, not getting in trouble, munching away on a patch of prime grass, and you look up…
He’s… GONE!
The shepherd is GONE! You bleat to your buddy… “he’s gone!” Nervous bleating starts spreading. “Where is our shepherd?” And about the time the cacophony of noise becomes completely chaotic, you see him. Walking toward you. With a lamb wrapped around his shoulders.
As the shepherd gets closer, thoughts wander through your little sheep-brain:
What if a wolf had come while he was gone?
He must not really love us, or he’d never have left.
Couldn’t he have waited for a better time, when a junior shepherd was around?
How reckless!
Grace always looks that way to the righteous…
…to Joseph’s older brothers.
…to the pharisees.
…to the prodigal’s older brother.
And if we’re honest, sometimes, to you and me. Maybe that’s why, in spite of the unorthodox use of the word “reckless” to describe the love of God, we should sing this song. Because as soon as the love of God seems perfectly safe, it’s no longer grace.
Reckless Love
